2026-01

In the ESG era, how companies translate social responsibility into meaningful action has become a defining question for modern enterprises.

The CHMER Shou-Yi Education Foundation was established in 2015 by Chairman Wang Wu-Hsiung as an expression of gratitude — both to society and to the values instilled by his father. As CHMER celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, Wang's daughter, Wang Hui-Chen, has assumed the role of Executive Director, continuing the family's long-standing commitment to education.

Shortly after taking office, Wang Hui-Chen met with Chang Yen-Shu, the instructor leading the art therapy program at Li Zhi Juvenile Correctional School, and listened closely to the stories of the at-risk youth enrolled there. Most of the students come from deeply disadvantaged backgrounds and have strayed from the right path due to a lack of support and guidance — a reality consistent with media reports of rising youth involvement in fraud cases. In an era of declining birth rates, failing to provide timely intervention risks allowing these young people to re-enter the cycle of crime after leaving school, posing a broader concern for society. The program team therefore hopes that art education can soften these young hearts and replace a culture of violence with one of aesthetic sensitivity and self-expression.

Upon learning about the program's vision, Wang Hui-Chen immediately committed to sponsoring the printing of an art catalogue to document the students' work, and to having each student's piece professionally framed and displayed.

Five hundred copies of Symphony of Life — A Dialogue Between World Music and the Brushstrokes of Youth were unveiled at last September's Family Day event. When parents gathered in the school's assembly hall and saw their children's artwork beautifully presented, many were deeply moved — and the students themselves gained a powerful boost in confidence. Chairman Wang Wu-Hsiung personally reviewed the catalogue and shared reflections from his own years of hard work and perseverance. He further expressed his hope that, beyond artistic creation, the students would be encouraged to build practical, employable skills — and that they would face the challenges ahead with courage and talent.

United in purpose, father and daughter took the initiative one step further: CHMER welcomed 200 student artworks from Li Zhi Juvenile Correctional School for display in the company's employee dining hall, inviting staff to participate in this act of social good as part of their daily lives.

The exhibition, Driftwood Reborn, was co-organized by Li Zhi Juvenile Correctional School and the CHMER Shou-Yi Education Foundation, with pro-bono curatorial work by Aiermei Aesthetics & Arts. It brings together 200 selected student works that trace the journey of these young people — how, through the companionship of art, they gradually came to understand their emotions and rediscover their sense of self-worth.

Symphony of Life grew out of the school's internal art therapy curriculum, implemented on a class-by-class basis beginning in March 2025. Students are guided to express their inner emotions through painting in a safe, respectful environment. Many who were once withdrawn or self-critical have, through the act of creation, begun to build a sense of achievement and confidence. Their works speak their life stories with honesty and authenticity — stories that have moved businesses and communities alike to take concrete steps in supporting the students' development of practical skills in plumbing and electrical work.

The exhibition's central image — driftwood reborn — symbolizes how lives that have been overlooked can, with care and nurturing, find their voice again. As the curatorial team expressed: this investment is not merely a contribution of resources, but a declaration of trust and commitment to these young lives. When society is willing to offer one more chance, these youth will — in time — rise to honor the weight of being believed in.
